Electric Wok Vs. Stovetop Wok: Which One To Choose?

Woks are considered as the essential utensil when it comes to cooking Asian dishes. Initially, woks came in use in China, and then it was being used in almost Asian countries. Woks are used for deep-frying, boiling, poaching, braising and stir-frying. Basically, there are two types of woks available in the market, one with the traditional design known as Stovetop woks and another one with modern technology name called Electric woks.

Stovetop woks come in its traditional basic design without any technology; they shaped like deep bowls with attached wooden handles on opposite sides or one big handle on the side. A stovetop is a modified version of the traditional wok, still acquiring its traditional shape but able to work efficiently on western-style gas stoves. Traditional woks were not that much stable, and there was no concentrated heat area.

However, as the time pass, technology comes in use and thing become better than before with the help of wok ring, which replaces the burner cover and provides more stability and concentrated heat on a particular area of the wok. Among this, stovetop’s hot spot is placed in the centre, where all the cooking process takes place. Food can be shifted to the rounded sides to keep the food warm without burning it.

Stovetops are very durable, because of not having any technological feature they don’t need that much care and can serve you for a long time without compromising with its quality and advantages.

Even after having this much advantage, stovetop woks still have many drawbacks which cannot be ignored.

If we talk about cleaning, then stovetop woks are easy to clean, as there is no use of the electric system in them, so it is quite an easy job to wash/clean them. But hold on!! Even after, there is no technological feature in it; it is still a little tricky to clean them because of their sticky surface.

Stovetop woks do not have an advantage of non-stick surface, because of this; you can probably ruin your food by burning it. Also, food can stick on the surface while cooking, and it is hard to remove. Despite this, stovetops have come in aluminium and stainless steel, which are poor in heating distribution. Well, to get rid of this problem, you have to warm your stovetop wok with little oiling.

Additionally, you have to use a wok ring in order to use a stovetop effectively; you have to set a wok ring, which provides proper stability to wok on any gas stove.

Electric woks – Merits

Electric woks are quite similar to Stovetop woks, but they still have incredible advantages over stovetop woks.

One of the best features of an electric wok is they have a heat controller, by which one can easily adjust heat as per their demand. You can also use it at its maximum temperature, which is 400° F, without any consequences.

Moving further, if we talk about their material, then they come with a non-stick coated surface, which is absent in stovetop woks. Due to having a non-stick surface, you don’t need to worry about food burning or sticking on the surface at the time of cooking.

In addition, some of the electric wok comes with a removable base. All-electric system is installed so that you can remove them while cleaning them. Because of non-stick surface, they are easily washable with dish wash sop without harming your expensive utensil.

In the market, a wide range of variety is available in term of designs. Commonly, electric woks come in a simple black coating on base with a glass top. One of the biggest demerits of the electric wok is heat. In the comparison of stovetops, the electric wok is unable to provide temperature more than 400°F, which is not enough to those dishes that need to boil more than fried.

Another biggest shortcoming of an electric wok is they are quite expensive, and because of this, they are not easily available in local stores. The reason behind its unaffordable pricing is its modern features and excellent quality material.
